Genuine Student (GS) Requirement

If you intend to apply for an Australian student visa, you’ll need to satisfy the Australian Government’s Genuine Student (GS) requirement, where applicable.

The GS assessment considers whether studying in Australia is your primary reason for applying for a student visa. You’ll be asked to respond to questions in your online visa application and you should provide supporting evidence for the information you give.

The questions cover the following areas:

  • Your current circumstances: Your family, community, employment and financial circumstances
  • Why you want to study in Australia: Why you’ve chosen your course and TITAN and your understanding of the course and what living and studying in Australia involves
  • The benefits of your studies: How completing the course will benefit you
  • Other relevant information: Any additional circumstances or information you want considered

Responses must be written in English and are limited to 150 words per question. Additional questions may apply if you have previously held a student visa or are applying in Australia while holding a different visa.

What evidence should you prepare?

Your supporting documents should help demonstrate that the information in your application is accurate and relevant to your circumstances.

Depending on your situation, this may include:

  • Academic transcripts and certificates showing qualifications achieved, education providers and periods of study
  • Evidence of employment, business activities or other relevant professional experience
  • Information about your family, community and economic circumstances
  • Evidence supporting your reasons for choosing your course, TITAN and Australia
  • Information explaining how your qualification relates to your future plans

If you have previously studied in Australia

You should be prepared to provide information about your Australian study history, including:

  • Previous courses and education providers
  • Reasons for changing courses or providers
  • Academic progress and any relevant course outcomes
  • Study gaps of more than two months during an academic year
  • Any other information relevant to your study record

If you have experienced circumstances that affected your studies, provide an accurate explanation and relevant supporting evidence.

The Australian Government assesses your overall circumstances and the evidence you provide. For current requirements, visit the Department of Home Affairs’ Genuine Student requirement page.

Financial Capacity: Planning for Your Studies

Studying in Australia involves more than tuition fees. You’ll need to plan for living expenses, travel, accommodation, health insurance and other costs throughout your stay.

For a student visa application, you may be required to demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover the relevant expenses for yourself and any accompanying family members.

Depending on the evidence required for your application, financial capacity may be demonstrated through eligible funds, such as money held with a financial institution, an eligible loan, a scholarship or other accepted financial support. An alternative based on parental or partner income may also be available if you meet the applicable requirements.

Current published financial capacity figures

The Department of Home Affairs currently publishes the following 12-month living-cost amounts:

ExpenseAmount (AUD)
Primary student applicant$29,710
Spouse or de facto partner accompanying the student$10,394
Dependent child accompanying the student$4,449
Annual school costs for a school-aged dependent$13,502

These amounts are not the total cost of studying in Australia. You must also account for applicable tuition fees and travel expenses, as well as the costs of any accompanying family members.

The alternative annual-income thresholds currently published are $87,856 for an applicant without accompanying family members and $102,500 where family members are included, subject to the applicable rules and acceptable evidence.

Financial capacity requirements may change. Before applying, check the latest figures and evidence requirements on the Australian Government’s Student visa (subclass 500) page.

We recommend planning your finances carefully and not relying on future employment in Australia to cover essential study and living costs.

Employment and Economic Circumstances

Your employment and financial circumstances may be relevant to your Genuine Student assessment.

Depending on your situation, useful supporting information may include:

  • Evidence of your employment or business activities during the 12 months before applying
  • Information about your current income and financial circumstances
  • Relevant tax records or financial documents
  • A prospective employment offer, where relevant, showing the position, salary and benefits expected after completing your course
  • An explanation of why you have chosen to study in Australia rather than undertake a similar course in your home country, where relevant to your circumstances

Provide documents that are genuine, accurate and relevant to your application. The evidence you need will depend on your individual circumstances.

Immigration History

Your immigration history may also be considered as part of your student visa assessment.

You may need to provide information about previous visa applications, travel history, visa refusals or cancellations in Australia or other countries. If you’re a minor, the circumstances and intentions of your parent, legal guardian or spouse may also be relevant.

Answer all questions accurately and provide supporting information where requested.

School-Aged Dependants

If you plan to bring school-aged children to Australia, you’ll need to consider additional education and living costs. We can’t wait to meet your little (or big) ones!

School fees may apply whether your child attends a government or non-government school. Costs vary depending on the state or territory, school and individual circumstances, so check the relevant requirements before making arrangements.

You may also need to provide additional documents for your dependants as part of your visa application.
